Grootvadersbos and The Overberg

Grootvadersbos and The OverbergLocated just outside Swellendam in the Overberg region, the Grootvadersbos Nature Reserve is a haven for Forest and Fynbos birds alike.

This trip requires an early start to the largest indigenous forest in the southwestern Cape - the Grootvadersbos Nature Reserve.

  • Knysna and Yellowthroated Warbler
  • Olive Bush Shrike
  • as well as the majestic Crowned Eagle.

We continue to the Overberg, an area of sandveld Fynbos amongst wheatfields, which holds the largest concentration of Blue Cranes in the country. A mixture of Fynbos and Karoo birds such as Grassbird, Cape Sugarbird, Denham's Bustard, Southern Tchagra and Cape Vulture may be seen in and near the De Hoop Nature Reserve area.

The recently split Agulhas Longbilled and Agulhas Clapper Lark also occurs here.
