Kalahari & Northern Cape, including Namaqualand

Kalahari & Northern Cape, including NamaqualandThis route will take you 1200km north of Cape Town in the semi desert/desert area of the Northern Cape. The red dunes with their sparse grass cover makes this a unique desert region.

Day one we travel through the Swartland past wheat fields, onwards through orange orchards onto the Northern Cape, a region of arid beauty and reach our 1st nights destination, Augrabies Falls National Park. Our arrival is in the late afternoon, giving you time to view the spectacular Augrabies Falls, where the Orange River crashes through a narrow gorge and down a 56m drop.

At dawn a game drive is enjoyed, whereafter we tackle the rest of the road via Upington to the Kalahari National Park, arriving in the late afternoon, in time for a refreshing swim and sundowners. Night drives are highly recommended (optional extra provided by the Park) and need to be prebooked, so advise if you wish to go on one.

We spend a minimum of 3 nights in the Kalahari National Park thereby giving you a taste of this region! Many of your localised Lark species occur here and a trip to the Kalahari National Park will produce the finest Raptor viewing in South Africa. This is home to the magnificent black maned lions and game viewing can be exciting between the birds! Ground Squirrels are regular visitors to the campsites and rest areas and provide many hours of entertainment! Suricates (Meercats) can be seen close to their burrows and pose willingly in various comical stances. Photographic opportunities for animals and birds alike are numerous, but remember to buy the correct film for these bright conditions.

Accommodation is in the Restcamps, which provide comfortable chalets, some with airconditioning. A restaurant at Twee Rivieren provides traditional venison meals and other South African dishes.

Heading back to Cape Town we travel south to Brandvlei and on to Cape Town, arriving in the late afternoon. Onward flights from Cape Town and also add from Upington can be arranged.
