Tanqua Karoo

Tanqua Karoo

Birding in the Tanqua Karoo

This trip into the semi-desert (succulent Karoo) requires an early start in order to arrive in the Karoo just after dawn, therefore we recommend that this tour starts the evening before, overnighting in Ceres. This tour can be added on as a second day to the East Coast tour.

Located beyond the Hexriver and Swartruggens (Black-back) Mountains, North of Ceres, this is a dry thirst land region that provides  some excellent birding. Being geologically and botanically different from anywhere else, visitors can appreciate the landscape and fauna whilst birdwatching. .

The nomadic birds found in this area depend heavily upon where the rain has fallen, but the area hosts numerous endemics and near-endemics such as:

  • Pale Chanting Goshawk
  • Karoo Korhaan
  • Karoo Chat
  • Tractrac Chat
  • Karoo and Yellow-bellied Eremomela
  • Namaqua Warbler
  • Pale-winged Starling
  • Black-headed Canary
  • Layard’s Tit-babbler
